Mom and Duck 1962

Last week I joined my mother for dinner. I mentioned that I was continuing some research on the family tree. She reminded me that she had a box of pictures that she inherited from my grandmother and that there might be some interesting treasures in there. After dinner I went to her house and we took the box up from the basement and looked over them together.

There were many wonderful photos in that old Wisconsin beer box. This might be my favorite. It is my mother and her duck in South Minneapolis. The border of the picture reveals the year: 1962

Jordon,

Thanks for sharing this photo. I can tell it's special to you. Makes you wonder what other family history gems are just waiting to be discovered doesn't it?

Cheers,

Comments from my mother:

Hi...that duck was one of three ducklings I raised. I loved them and took care of them everyday. They followed me around everywhere. It gave me a lot of happiness that I really needed. I got the ducklings from a man a few blocks away. I was walking home from elementary school and I stopped to look at them in his yard. He asked me if I wanted them and I said yes! I was so excited to have them and I can't believe Dot let me keep them. As I said I raised them from tiny ducklings. One day the man asked for them back...it broke my heart and my mom made me give them back to him. I was walking to school one day and the man asked me if I wanted to see my ducks. I was so excited to see them again. He opened up the freezer and showed my dead ducks to me. I was so traumatized I screamed and ran away as fast as I could. I just couldn't believe someone could be that cruel. I sure have met some cruel people in my time.
...their names were Huey, Dewey and Louie. The names came from Disney. Huey, Dewey and Louie were Donald Duck’s nephews I believe.
